SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy\, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar’s life\, so different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass\, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments: marriage into a “proper” family estranges him from his parents; his career is stymied; his wife and daughter turn coldly away from him; a transforming experience of new love ends under threat of scandal. Driven ever deeper within himself\, Stoner rediscovers the stoic silence of his forebears and confronts an essential solitude. \nJohn Williams’s luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American\, but as an unlikely existential hero\, standing\, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper\, in stark relief against an unforgiving world. \nThird Thursday is an informal group\, open to all\, no sign up necessary. Reserve your book at the adult circulation desk or online.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Monday of the month for a lively discussion of this month’s title and other of life’s mysteries. Copies of the book are usually available at the circulation desk or can be reserved online or by asking at the desk. This discussion also features cheese pizza while it lasts. Free and open to all. \n“When 13-year-old Jace Wilson witnesses a brutal murder\, he’s plunged into a new life\, issued a false identity and hidden in a wilderness skills program for troubled teens. The plan is to get Jace off the grid while police find the two killers. The result is the start of a nightmare. The killers\, known as the Blackwell Brothers\, are slaughtering anyone who gets in their way in a methodical quest to reach him. Now all that remains between them and the boy are Ethan and Allison Serbin\, who run the wilderness survival program; Hannah Faber\, who occupies a lonely fire lookout tower; and endless miles of desolate Montana mountains. The clock is ticking\, the mountains are burning\, and those who wish Jace Wilson dead are no longer far behind” — from publisher’s web site.

SUMMARY:Mystery Book Discussion - White Heat by M. J. McGrath
\n\n\n\n\n\nBooklist Reviews \n*Starred Review* On remote and sparsely populated Ellesmere Island\, half-Inuit Edie Kiglatuk\, who has never lost a client\, is the best guide in the Canadian High Arctic. Then one of two southerner white men\, who hire Edie for a hunting expedition\, is mysteriously shot and killed in an incident that local authorities cover up. When the victim’s colleague returns for a trip led by Joe Inukpuk\, Edie’s beloved stepson\, the man is lost in a blizzard\, and Joe struggles home\, incoherent and frostbitten\, and soon commits suicide. Devastated by her loss\, Edie—a 33-year-old divorcée\, recovered alcoholic\, and part-time teacher\, who was financing Joe’s nursing training—falls off the wagon temporarily before setting out to prove the connection between the recent events. With occasional help from police sergeant Derek Palliser\, a man obsessed with lemmings and a failed love affair\, she risks her life to find the truth. In a gripping debut novel\, McGrath (who has written nonfiction as Melanie McGrath) transports the reader to a land of almost incomprehensible cold and an unfamiliar but fascinating culture\, taking on issues of climate change\, energy exploration\, local politics\, and drug and alcohol abuse. Edie\, a fiercely independent woman in a male-dominated milieu\, is sure to win fans. Expect great things from this series. Copyright 2011 Booklist Reviews.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Discussion - The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
DESCRIPTION:Publishers Weekly Reviews \nNot long after Jack the Ripper haunted the ill-lit streets of 1888 London\, H.H. Holmes (born Herman Webster Mudgett) dispatched somewhere between 27 and 200 people\, mostly single young women\, in the churning new metropolis of Chicago; many of the murders occurred during (and exploited) the city’s finest moment\, the World’s Fair of 1893. Larson’s breathtaking new history is a novelistic yet wholly factual account of the fair and the mass murderer who lurked within it. Bestselling author Larson (Isaac’s Storm) strikes a fine balance between the planning and execution of the vast fair and Holmes’s relentless\, ghastly activities. The passages about Holmes are compelling and aptly claustrophobic; readers will be glad for the frequent escapes to the relative sanity of Holmes’s co-star\, architect and fair overseer Daniel Hudson Burnham\, who managed the thousands of workers and engineers who pulled the sprawling fair together 0n an astonishingly tight two-year schedule. A natural charlatan\, Holmes exploited the inability of authorities to coordinate\, creating a small commercial empire entirely on unpaid debts and constructing a personal cadaver-disposal system. This is\, in effect\, the nonfiction Alienist\, or a sort of companion\, which might be called Homicide\, to Emile Durkheim’s Suicide. However\, rather than anomie\, Larson is most interested in industriousness and the new opportunities for mayhem afforded by the advent of widespread public anonymity. This book is everything popular history should be\, meticulously recreating a rich\, pre-automobile America on the cusp of modernity\, in which the sale of “articulated” corpses was a semi-respectable trade and serial killers could go well-nigh unnoticed. 6 b&w photos\, 1 map. (Feb.) Forecast: With this book\, Larson builds on the success of Isaac’s Storm. Anyone with an interest in American history-in particular fans of Stephen Ambrose and David McCullough-should find much to engross them here. SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Discussion - Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger
DESCRIPTION:“That was it. That was all of it. A grace so ordinary there was no reason at all to remember it. Yet I have never across the forty years since it was spoken forgotten a single word.” \nNew Bremen\, Minnesota\, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season\, ice-cold root beers were selling out at the soda counter of Halderson’s Drugstore\, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new\, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder. \nFrank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy\, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate\, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets\, lies\, adultery\, and betrayal\, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. \nTold from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer\, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood\, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God. \nThird Thursday is an informal group\, open to all\, no sign up necessary. Reserve your book at the adult circulation desk or online.

SUMMARY:Mystery Book Discussion - Rage Against the Dying
DESCRIPTION:Open to all interested adults – no sign up necessary. “Keeping secrets\, telling lies\, they require the same skill. Both become a habit\, almost an addiction\, that’s hard to break even with the people closest to you\, out of the business. For example\, they say never trust a woman who tells you her age; if she can’t keep that secret\, she can’t keep yours. I’m fifty-nine.” Brigid Quinn’s experiences in hunting sexual predators for the FBI have left her with memories she wishes she didn’t have and lethal skills she hopes never to need again. Having been pushed into early retirement by events she thinks she’s put firmly behind her\, Brigid keeps telling herself she is settling down nicely in Tucson with a wonderful new husband\, Carlo\, and their dogs. But the past intervenes when a man named Floyd Lynch confesses to the worst unsolved case of Brigid’s career–the disappearance and presumed murder of her young protégée\, Jessica. Floyd knows things about that terrible night that were never made public\, and offers to lead the cops to Jessica’s body in return for a plea bargain. It should finally be the end of a dark chapter in Brigid’s life. Except…the new FBI agent on the case\, Laura Coleman\, thinks the confession is fake\, and Brigid finds she cannot walk away from violence and retribution after all\, no matter what the cost. With a fiercely original and compelling voice\, Becky Masterman’s Rage Against the Dying marks the heart-stopping debut of a brilliant new thriller writer”– Provided by publisher.

SUMMARY:A Tale for the Time Being - Third Thursday Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“”A time being is someone who lives in time\, and that means you\, and me\, and every one of us who is\, or was\, or ever will be.” In Tokyo\, sixteen-year-old Nao has decided there’s only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates’ bullying. But before she ends it all\, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother\, a Buddhist nun who’s lived more than a century. A diary is Nao’s only solace–and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific\, we meet Ruth\, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox–possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami. As the mystery of its contents unfolds\, Ruth is pulled into the past\, into Nao’s drama and her unknown fate\, and forward into her own future. Full of Ozeki’s signature humor and deeply engaged with the relationship between writer and reader\, past and present\, fact and fiction\, quantum physics\, history\, and myth\, A Tale for the Time Being is a brilliantly inventive\, beguiling story of our shared humanity and the search for home”– Provided by publisher. \nThird Thursday is an informal group\, open to all\, no sign up necessary.
