SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Steve Upton Photographs "Profiles in Nature"
DESCRIPTION:From the savannas of Kenya and the “Great Migration”\, jaguar in Brazil\, polar bear in the Arctic Circle\, to walking amongst grizzlies in Alaska\, Steve Upton has photographed wildlife non-stop. Somewhere along that journey\, photography stopped being about camera settings and gadgets and evolved into a form of story telling. In essence\, (says Upton) [his] mission shifted from a pursuit of technical expertise to one of capturing the world’s most awesome and beautiful creatures in their environments and bringing their stories home. Maintaining habitats is the only way populations can escape extinction but his comes in direct contrast with the development pressures of an ever expanding world. “Hopefully\, my photography can stimulate conversations about the value of co-existence and just how to accomplish this noble cause.” –from artist statement

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton
DESCRIPTION:I am pleased to be showing mostly recent oil paintings at the Tilton\nLibrary. Some of you probably know my daughter\, her husband and family\,\nRaloon and Grant\, Maddie and Soren Bialek and Pat Thompson who live\nnearby. I live in Vermont\, and also spend time in NYC and South\nDeerfield. I love drawing and painting and have been doing it since I\nwas six\, never stopped. I have a Bachelor of Fine Art from Cooper\nUnion and studied at the New York Studio School. I have taught art\nfrom kindergarten up thru graduate college level for thirty five years\nmost recently at Johnson State College in Vermont. My gallery is in\nNYC\, Blue Mountain Gallery\, where I will have a show in May\, 2017. You\nmight have seen works I showed with Jane Trigere at The Arts Bank. and\nat the Deerfield Gallery a few years ago. I almost always paint from\nactual life\, that is how I find the most interesting forms\, however I\nalso love other kinds of art and things people make. Art is an idea in\na sensuous form.

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Deerfield Impressions by Adrienne Cremins
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Statement: \nThe Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts has beautiful scenery\, as anyone who has visited will attest – mountains\, rivers\, lakes and ponds throughout many towns.  I’ve been fortunate to live in Deerfield for over 25 years\, within 10 minutes of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the valley. \nI have a BFA from Cooper Union\, and when my children were grown\, I started getting back to painting.  I began with pastels\, sitting in my car on the side of the road.  However\, when I began painting in oils\, my practice became to visit a location\, take photos\, and use them as reference\, together with my memory of the scene\, for a painting done in the studio. \nLast year\, I began working en plein air\, painting outdoors on location in Deerfield and a whole new world opened up. Plein air is a completely different way of working.  In one or two hours \, before the light changes\, you try to capture a scene.  There is always so much more to see than there is time to get it on canvas! \nAs you work\, the light is constantly changing\, emphasizing different colors\, changing forms\, so you need to make decisions on the fly about what to spend time on\, what notes you need to make\, how to articulate the scene.  Sometimes everything comes together – and the result is a complete painting.  More often\, it’s a note\, a sketch\, or an experiment in articulating light and form. \nPainting an impression en plein air celebrates what is happening right in the moment. For me\, it has also become a meditation – a way to focus on and appreciate a very beautiful part of the world\, on canvas.

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Connecticut River Series photographs by Carl Nardiello
DESCRIPTION:The photo works are from the Connecticut River Series\, which have been featured in two exhibition of this series in 2014 in the Pioneer Valley.  In addition\, there are three prints from a new series of works now in progress\, with the working title: “Naked Landscapes”. \nThe work in both these series is part of a larger body of work taken in the late fall\, winter and early springs\, when the foliage is mostly gone.  The colors\, forms and interaction of light\, water and trees\, reveal their essential beauty in unique and subtle ways. \nCarl Nardiello is a professional photographer from New York\, now living in Northampton. \nArchival pigmented inkjet prints\, 17×22″ image size\, and mounted in a 20×24″ frame with glass.  All materials used in mounting are to archival standards.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - The Colors Around Us - photographs by James H. Burrill
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Statement \nIf you stop and take the time to look around\, you will see some amazingly beautiful things.  Every once in the while\, I am lucky enough to both have my camera with me and capture the image.  Sometimes\, mostly with flowers\, I try to make the beauty shout out by eliminating extraneous background.  While I have always had an interest in photography\, the images in this exhibit range from 1978 when I bought my first serious camera to the present day where the magic of the digital world allows me to present just the part of the image that I want. \n-James H. SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Landscapes of Deerfield by Karen Savage
DESCRIPTION:The intense and vibrant color pastels create along with texture like soft velvet is very exciting to me.  I love the adventure of trying something new. \nCapturing light is one of the challenges that creates excitement for me.  I try to paint the light\, focusing on the dramatic results of the pattern of shade and sun.  The intense and vibrant color pastels create is very satisfying for me. – Karen Savage \n

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Sara Grillo
DESCRIPTION:Fall Out\, Fall In \nArtist’s Statement: \nI use acrylic paints to reproduce what I imagine. \nThere is a line of thought which has been central to the recent art you see here. \nIn philosophical traditions\, from Buddhism to Psychiatry\, the mind is conceptualized as a fragmented entity. \nUnity and cohesion characterize the bookends of our lives – the innocence of birth and the wisdom of enlightenment / actualization. \nBetween these extremes\, we experience an ego that is splintered and dynamic – in constant shift. \nWhere are we at any given moment? \nAre we falling apart\, or knitting ourselves back together? \n  \nSara

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - As If/Field Study - Series by Allen Fowler
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Statement: I have an affinity for abstract expressionism\, its use of gesture\, the energy and spontaneity\, the color fields and graphics that suggest the landscape.  In equal measure\, I have always been struck by our need to slice\, dice and structure the world around us from our gridded cities to the geometry we impose/compose on farm fields.  The Field Study and As If Series revolve around this relationship – the character of the organic and the equally relentless human desire for structure and design. \nAll pieces are displayed on the second level of the library and are for sale to the public.  A portion of the proceeds benefit Tilton Library. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Tony Faith
DESCRIPTION:“I grew up traveling with my family. We lived in places as diverse as the Rocky Mountains\, rural southern farming and fishing villages\, and northern college towns. Exploring new places and meeting people from different backgrounds always excited me. Working with glass has introduced me to a community of diverse individuals and opportunity for travel.” \nTony Faith lives with his wife\, Cynthia\, in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts.  He earned a BFA cum laude from UMASS\, Amherst in 2001. His interest in glass art began in 1997 as a freshman in college with an independent study at Lunt Silversmiths in Greenfield\, MA.  After finishing school Tony worked for the glass artists Josh Simpson\, Jenn Violette and Robert Dane. For the last ten years Tony has worked for Ed Branson in Ashfield\, MA. \nTony has studied at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts with Jose’ Chardiet and Jack Wax and at Pilchuck Glass School with Robbie Miller and John Drury. Tony has also taught classes at Snow Farm School for Crafts. Currently Tony sells his glass art at local galleries and regional craft shows. \nMeet Tony on Friday mornings at Tilton Library!
