SUMMARY:Art at Tilton - Deerfield Impressions by Adrienne Cremins
DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Statement: \nThe Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts has beautiful scenery\, as anyone who has visited will attest – mountains\, rivers\, lakes and ponds throughout many towns.  I’ve been fortunate to live in Deerfield for over 25 years\, within 10 minutes of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the valley. \nI have a BFA from Cooper Union\, and when my children were grown\, I started getting back to painting.  I began with pastels\, sitting in my car on the side of the road.  However\, when I began painting in oils\, my practice became to visit a location\, take photos\, and use them as reference\, together with my memory of the scene\, for a painting done in the studio. \nLast year\, I began working en plein air\, painting outdoors on location in Deerfield and a whole new world opened up. Plein air is a completely different way of working.  In one or two hours \, before the light changes\, you try to capture a scene.  There is always so much more to see than there is time to get it on canvas! \nAs you work\, the light is constantly changing\, emphasizing different colors\, changing forms\, so you need to make decisions on the fly about what to spend time on\, what notes you need to make\, how to articulate the scene.  Sometimes everything comes together – and the result is a complete painting.  More often\, it’s a note\, a sketch\, or an experiment in articulating light and form. \nPainting an impression en plein air celebrates what is happening right in the moment. For me\, it has also become a meditation – a way to focus on and appreciate a very beautiful part of the world\, on canvas.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Discussion - All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
DESCRIPTION:“From the highly acclaimed\, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr\, a stunningly ambitious and beautiful novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six\, she goes blind\, and her father builds her a model of their neighborhood\, every house\, every manhole\, so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris\, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast\, where Marie-Laure’s agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall\, narrow house by the sea wall. In another world in Germany\, an orphan boy\, Werner\, grows up with his younger sister\, Jutta\, both enchanted by a crude radio Werner finds. He becomes a master at building and fixing radios\, a talent that wins him a place at an elite and brutal military academy and\, ultimately\, makes him a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Werner travels through the heart of Hitler Youth to the far-flung outskirts of Russia\, and finally into Saint-Malo\, where his path converges with Marie-Laure. Doerr’s gorgeous combination of soaring imagination with observation is electric. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner\, Doerr illuminates the ways\, against all odds\, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing\, All the Light We Cannot See is his most ambitious and dazzling work”– Provided by publisher \nThird Thursday is an informal group\, open to all\, no sign up necessary. Reserve your book at the adult circulation desk or online.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Deerfield Impressions - Artist's Talk - A Plein Air Journey by Adrienne Cremins
DESCRIPTION:Learning something new is one of the joys of life. Learning to paint en plein air has been both a joy and an enormous challenge. Planning\, equipment\, practice routine\, bugs\, working with changing light\, and talking to folks you meet while working.  One year into becoming a plein air painter\, I feel that I’ve barely scratched the surface.  Plein air has given me an entirely new perspective on what and how to paint.\nI am looking forward to sharing this work-in-progress.\nAdrienne Cremins

SUMMARY:Mystery Book Discussion - Redemption Road by John Hart
DESCRIPTION:Over 2 million copies of his books in print. The first and only author to win back-to-back Edgars for Best Novel. Every book a New York Times bestseller. Now after five years\, John Hart is back with a stunning literary thriller. Imagine: A boy with a gun waits for the man who killed his mother. A troubled detective confronts her past in the aftermath of a brutal shooting. After thirteen years in prison\, a good cop walks free. But for how long? And deep in the forest\, on the altar of an abandoned church\, the unthinkable has just happened… This is a town on the brink. This is a road with no mercy. Since his debut bestseller\, The King of Lies\, reviewers across the country have heaped praise on John Hart\, comparing his writing to that of Pat Conroy\, Cormac McCarthy and Scott Turow. With each novel Hart has climbed higher on the New York Times Bestseller list\, with his last two books – The Last Child and Iron House – landing squarely in the top ten. His masterful writing and assured evocation of place have won readers around the world and earned history’s only consecutive Edgar Awards for Best Novel. After five years\, John Hart returns with Redemption Road\, his most powerful story yet”– Provided by publisher. \nJoin us on the first Thursday of the month for a lively discussion of this month’s title and other of life’s mysteries. Copies of the book are usually available at the circulation desk or can be reserved online or by asking at the desk. This discussion also features cheese pizza while it lasts. Free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Discussion - The Headmaster: Frank L. Boyden\, of Deerfield by John McPhee
DESCRIPTION:In the first chapter of this biography of Frank L. Boyden\, McPhee writes: “By the late nineteen-thirties\, it had become clear that he was one of the greatest headmasters in history\, and for many years he has stood alone as\, in all probability\, the last man of his kind. He is at the near end of a skein of magnanimous despots who – no matter whether they had actually founded the places or not – created enduring schools through their own individual energies\, maintained them under their own absolute rule\, and left them forever imprinted with the own personalities.” \nThird Thursday is an informal group\, open to all\, no sign up necessary. Reserve your book at the adult circulation desk or online.
