SUMMARY:THIRD THURSDAY BOOK GROUP: Himself by Jess Kidd
DESCRIPTION:Having been abandoned at an orphanage as a baby\, Mahony assumed all his life that his mother wanted nothing to do with him. That is\, until one night in 1976 while drinking a pint at a Dublin pub\, he receives an anonymous note implying that she may have been forced to give him up. Determined to find out what really happened\, Mahony embarks on a pilgrimage back to his hometown\, the rural village of Mulderrig. Neither he nor Mulderrig can possibly prepare for what’s in store… \nFrom the moment he arrives\, Mahony’s presence completely changes the village. Women fall all over themselves. The real and the fantastic are blurred. Chatty ghosts rise from their graves with secrets to tell\, and local preacher Father Quinn will do anything to get rid of the slippery young man who is threatening the moral purity of his parish. \nA spectacular new addition to the grand Irish storytelling tradition\, Himself “is a darkly comic tale of murder\, intrigue\, haunting and illegitimacy…wickedly funny” (Daily Express). \nFree and open to all. Books available through the library.

SUMMARY:MYSTERY BOOK GROUP: Our House by Louise Candlish
DESCRIPTION:“The perfect book for thriller readers and true-crime podcast addicts…a stunning literary thriller that artfully twists and turns until the very end.”–Bustle \nOne of The Washington Post‘s 10 Best Thrillers and Mysteries of the Year\nOne of Publishers Weekly‘s Best Books of the Year\nOne of Real Simple‘s Best Books of the Year \nOn a bright morning in the suburbs\, a family moves into the house they’ve just bought on Trinity Avenue. Nothing strange about that. Except it’s your house. And you didn’t sell it. \nWhen Fiona Lawson arrives home to find strangers moving into her house\, she is plunged into terror and confusion. She and her husband\, Bram\, have owned their home on Trinity Avenue for years; how can another family possibly think the house is theirs? And why has Bram disappeared–along with their two young children–when she needs him most? \nAs the nightmare takes hold\, Fiona begins to untangle the lies that led to a devastating crime–and a betrayal so shocking it will teach her to keep her own secrets behind locked doors…. \n  \nTilton Library’s mystery book discussion group has been meeting on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. since 2010.  Group members choose the books to be discussed and library staffers order copies for members and others who might be interested in readng the books but not attending the meetings.  The group is open to all.  Free pizza (while it lasts) is provided by the Friends of Tilton Library. Books available at the library.

SUMMARY:THIRD THURSDAY BOOK GROUP: A Gentleman in Moscow
DESCRIPTION:The mega-bestseller with more than 1.5 million readers that is soon to be a major television series \nHe can’t leave his hotel. You won’t want to. \nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility—a transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel. \nIn 1922\, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal\, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol\, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov\, an indomitable man of erudition and wit\, has never worked a day in his life\, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly\, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. \nBrimming with humor\, a glittering cast of characters\, and one beautifully rendered scene after another\, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose. \nFree and open to all. Books available through the library.

SUMMARY:Local Author Talk & Wood Carving Demo
DESCRIPTION:CARVING OUT A LIVING ON THE LAND\nwith Emmet Van Driesche\nof Ashfield’s Pieropan Christmas Tree Farm\nWhen he first envisioned becoming a farmer\, author Emmet Van Driesche never imagined his main crop would be Christmas trees\, nor that such a tree farm could be more of a managed forest than the conventional grid of perfectly sheared trees. Carving Out a Living on the Land tells the story of how Van Driesche navigated changing life circumstances\, took advantage of unexpected opportunities\, and leveraged new and old skills to piece together an economically viable living\, while at the same time respecting the land’s complex ecological relationships. \nFrom spoon carving to scything\, coppicing to wreath-making\, Carving Out a Living on the Land proves that you don’t need acres of expensive bottomland to start your land-based venture\, but rather the creativity and vision to see what might be done with that rocky section or ditch or patch of trees too small to log.
