Deerfield Reads! Registration and Books Available February 1

What if everyone in Deerfield read the same book?  Reading great books prompts us to think about ourselves, our environment and our relationships.  Talking about books with friends, family and neighbors often adds a richness and depth to the reading experience.  We hope you will read and enjoy "Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash" by former western Mass. resident Edward Humes and - talk about it with your friends and neighbors - attend the book discussion and related programs listed on this calendar and at Tilton Library - meet new people and share ideas - read more for pleasure and encourage your children to do so "The real secret at the heart of Garbology may well be the potential for a happy ending buried in our landfill.  Waste, Humes writes, is the one environmental and economic harm that ordinary working Americans have the power to change - and prosper in the process." All programs are free and open to the public. Events include:  STEM workshops for kids; Worm Bin Workshop; Lou's Upcycling Workshop; Mobile Art; Book Art Workshop; Book Discussion, Eat It Up Food Challenge; Highway 91 Talk.  Watch this calendar for a complete listing of dates and times. Program length: February 16-March 28, 2016. This project made possible with funds provided by: a grant from the Deerfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency; Friends of Tilton Library; Greenfield Cooperative Bank; Greenfield Savings Bank and private donations from library users.

Eat it Up Food Challenge

Can you cook a dish from food that is minimally or not packaged?  What can you make out of food already in your cupboard or freezer?  Give it a try and bring it (and your appetite) to the library on the first day of spring.  If you've read "Garbology" by Edward Humes you might feel inspired to try to waste less food. This program is part of Deerfield Reads, the community reading event presented by Tilton Library and is free and open to all.   Made possible with funds provided by a grant from Deerfield Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, Friends of Tilton Library and Greenfield Cooperative Bank.

Forest Bathing Retreat: Local Author Talk

LIBRARIES IN THE WOODS SERIES PRESENTS: A book talk with local author Hannah Fries People have been retreating to the woods for quiet, meditation, and inspiration for centuries, and recent research finds that time spent in the forest doesn’t just feel good but is, in fact, good for you. Inspired by the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, poet Hannah Fries invites readers to bask in the company of trees, whether in a city park or a rural nature preserve. Fries will read from her new book Forest Bathing Retreat and discuss her own interdisciplinary approach to the concept of forest bathing--a refreshing mix of literature, science, wonder, and the simple art of paying attention. LIBRARIES IN THE WOODS is a community-read program of 10 local libraries, featuring discussion and related programs on the book, “Stranger in the Woods: The extraordinary story of the last true hermit” by Michael Finkel. For more details, go to Libraries in the Woods on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/librariesinthewoods/.
